ENGINE COOLING FAN RELAY REPEATED REPLACEMENT

AN ENGINE OVERHEAT CONDITION IN AN A, X, OR J MODEL WITH THE STANDARD COOLING SYSTEM (SINGLE SPEED FAN MOTOR) MAY BE CAUSED BY AN INOPERATIVE COOLING FAN MOTOR. THE FAN MOTOR CONNECTOR BLOCK CONTAINS AN INTEGRAL CAPACITOR USED FOR RADIO NOISE SUPPRESSION. IF THE CAPACITOR BECOMES OPEN CIRCUITED, SOME RADIO NOISE MAY APPEAR DURING FAN MOTOR OPERATION. IF THE CAPACITOR BECOMES SHORT CIRCUITED, THE FAN MOTOR WILL NOT RUN AND MAY RESULT IN A BURNED "OPEN" FUSIBLE LINK AT THE STARTER SOLENOID. IF A VEHICLE HAS AN ENGINE OVERHEAT CONDITION, CHECK FOR THE FOLLOWING ITEMS: 1.C/H FUSE-BLOWN. 2.COOLANT FAN RELAY-OPERATIONAL. 3.IF FUSIBLE LINK 'C'-BURNED OPEN, BY-PASS AS FOLLOWS: (REFER TO COOLANT FAN CIRCUIT DIAGRAM IN SERVICE MANUAL) A.IGNITION OFF. B.DISCONNECT WIRE FROM MOTOR. C.CONNECT A JUMPER WIRE WITH A 30 AMP FUSE DIRECT FROM MOTOR TERMINAL TO BATTERY B+. D.IF FUSE BLOWS, REPLACE FAN MOTOR AND FUSIBLE LINK AT THE STARTER SOLENOID. E.IF MOTOR OPERATES NORMALLY, TROUBLE IS EXTERNAL TO MOTOR. FOLLOW TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS IN SECTION 8A-ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSIS.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
